Apparently, you haven’t fact-checked your opinion. Pres. Obama has saluted the flag in every single case where it was warranted. Why don’t you do yourself a favor and verify what you say before you say it!!
Reagan started the tradition of saluting. It is “inappropriate” for a civilian to salute military personnel and although the president is commander-in-chief of the military it is (this is very important) a CIVILIAN position. Unfortunately, because Reagan, the actor, started this tradition it has become required.
As a former military person who understands that a salute is appropriate by military personnel showing respect to the commander-in-chief having the civilian president return a salute is wrong. Again, saluting is a military function and the military personnel around the president would NOT be offended if he did not return the salute. (see Eisenhower, Kennedy et. al.) Because Eisenhower and Kennedy particularly were members of the military at one time they would have felt “awkward” returning a salute in civilian clothes. Those of us who were in the military understand that.
But as the senior person in command, the president does not have to return a salute. Until Reagan, presidents didn’t return salutes. Reagan chose to do so, in contradiction of both tradition and military protocol. And some in the military thought it made him (and Bush, when he did it) look like they were playing soldier instead of being the CIC. So if Obama salutes, you won’t like it, and if he doesn’t , you won’t like it. Face it — no matter what he does or doesn’t do, people like you will find a negative way to spin it.
Yeah, Tony, remember the big deal was he didn’t cover his heart during the National Anthem. not the Pledge. That, in fact, is not the traditional thing to do. One removes one’s hat (men only) and does NOT cover the heart. If in uniform, I believe, one is to salute. Pollice and fire should salute but I’m not sure it’s a must.

After reading the sections of his autobiography regarding his religion, I was appalled. He was quite honest about the fact that the main factor influencing this choice of parish was not the doctrines of the denomination or the preaching or the parish’s missions but the influential people he’d meet there. Bush II was dumb and then it turned out that he had a better GPA at Yale than Kerry did? What’s Obama’s GPA? You don’t know because he – unlike his predecessors – refuses to release his records.

Congress is under no obligation to shape the law to the President’s liking. Just because the President thinks the law should change doesn’t mean that Congress has to share that opinion, or that it’s obligated to change the law. And when the President acts to change the law without benefit of Congressional approval he can rightly be criticized for it. Or is taking advantage of the First Amendment only non-racist when the President is white?

Who’s saying he shouldn’t run for re-election because he’s black? This is absurd.

A lively exchange to say the least. Some of what I wrote in the original post was tongue in cheek. But most of it wasn’t. My fundamental point is that basic respect and legitimacy conferred to white Presidents has been denied President Obama. The fact that his birth certificate is being debated, the fact that his college achievements are being questioned, the fact that his use of executive orders is attacked, even though he’s used them far less than Bush, the fact that some Republicans seem to think he should be impeached, that they stoop so low as to criticize his wife’s appearance in, yes, racist terms — all these things speak to a subtext that even though Barack Obama is the duly elected President, he doesn’t deserve the rights and privileges that accompany the office. And I call B.S. on that.
For myself as well Mr Pinelo, B.S is B.S, I agree with you 100%. I know B.S. when I see it or hear it and I know a racist when I see them, hear them or have to waste my time wading through their words to get to something tangible. Sadly, since 08′ the one thing that’s taken me aback is people who I thought of solid moral charter surrounding me my entire life spew their racist B.S. toward a brilliant man. If you need a college transcript to come to a conclusion that someone is intelligent after listening to them using their mammoth knowledge and command of the English language for over 3 years you’re a freaking dolt! I can’t say I’ve heard President Obama use a mammoth knowledge and command of the English language. I’ve heard him use the knowledge and command of the English language of his speechwriters, but when he gets away from prepared speeches and speaks off the cuff the quality drops quite a bit and we start hearing how the United States has 57 states.
Now, I can see where people would think that asking Obama for his birth certificate might be at least in part prompted by racism. I’m no fool, folks. I’ve talked to people who oppose Obama because he’s black. Fair enough. But the mistake is to think that this motivates some large percentage of his opponents. in any case, asking him to produce his college transcripts is NOT racist, as it has been asked of other candidates for many years. Asking Obama to do something that has never been asked of a Presidential candidate before is one thing. But asking him to do something that has been done by Presidential candidates for many years prior is not.
Articulate glibness is not a measure of intelligence, folks. President Bush II was far less articulate than Sen. Kerry – yet Bush got better grades at Yale than Kerry did. Being an effective leader isn’t just being able to make good speeches. You have to be able to analyze situations with disparate and often inadequate information and then make a decision. Being able to make skillful speeches helps you not at all in that.
The man went to Harvard. Last time I remember you have to be pretty smart to get into Harvard. It’s upsurd how people disparage the president educational background and public speaking as though he graduated with a GED and stumbled into the white house. “Bush went Yale and had better grades than Kerry”. Bush also stole one election, slept on 911, started an unjust war, tortured, helped orchestrate the greatest economic disaster since the Depression and bailed out Wall street.
I went to MIT myself, so I’m not so impressed. And because they’re right down the street from each other and there’s a lot of joint projects/classes/social occasions I’ve met a number of people from Harvard. Some got in because they were smart. Some got in because one or more of their parents or grandparents went there (Harvard officially acknowledges that they have “legacy” admissions). Some get in because they are good at athletics – this number included one of my high school classmates, who after he got injured and could not longer compete ended up leaving Harvard. Some get in because they add “diversity” to Harvard’s student body. I put that in quotes because while Harvard seems to worry a lot about diversity of race or national or ethnic origin they have little concern for what comprises true diversity – diversity of thought.
So – he went to Harvard, so he must be super-smart? Meh. Not so much.

Well, the problem is that there’s no actual evidence. As far as the birth certificate goes, I personally figure that Barack Obama is a natural-born citizen of the U.S. I’m not a “birther”. But it is worth remarking that my kids had to show more proof of birth to play on a U-10 park district soccer team than he had to show to get elected President. And don’t ask me to trust the Hawaii Secretary of State – I live in Illinois, where we have a Governor doing hard time for felonies he committed while he was Secretary of State. Yes, they’ve handed over a .pdf of it – but those things are easily faked. Why don’t they just let some reporters – say, one from CNN, one from MSNBC and one from Fox – have a look at the hard copy, just to shut people up?
As far as brilliance goes, I haven’t seen it. Smarter than average, sure, I’ll give you that. He’s articulate, too – but that doesn’t make him brilliant, it just makes him a good salesman.
